Ed Henry Wins WHCA Presidency

July 16th, 2010

Ed Henry, 2009 Gridiron Dinner. Haddad Media

The 2012-13 White House Correspondents Association election results are in–and so is President-Elect Ed Henry of CNN.

FishbowlDC shares the other incoming elects: Politico’s Carol Lee takes the At-Large Chair, Time’s Michael Scherer the Magazine Chair and Henry also won the TV Chair.

While congratulating Lee, Mike Allen shares the WHCA voting tally, proving the At-Large vote was the closest of the four races. Under the President write-ins, however, it’s hard not to notice one sarcastic vote for Helen Thomas.

Now that a new board has been selected, the eerily-quiet anticipation for who’ll inherit the abandoned front row seat may continue.

Sheekey Returns to Bloomberg Media Company

March 2nd, 2010

WHCInsider favorite Kevin Sheekey announced he’s leaving Bloomberg politics and returning to Bloomberg business this spring, after serving as one of Mayor Bloomberg’s closest advisers for 13 years.

A Washington legend through his work as chief of staff to New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Sheekey played a critical role in the development of the super-select Bloomberg after party following the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Kevin Sheekey and Rev Al Sharpton spoof Meet the Press in the Betsy Fischer birthday video last week.

As the story goes, when Vanity Fair stepped down from hosting the exclusive after dinner party, Sheekey made the Russian Trade Ministry an offer they couldn’t refuse. And when the cast of NBC’s “West Wing” TV show arrived on candidate John McCain’s bus, the Straight Talk Express, a new Washington monument was born.

Doug Wilson, EVP of the Howard Gilman Foundation and Chairman of the Board for the Public Diplomacy Collaborative at Harvard, has been nominated for assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. No h/t to INSRIA, since we got it from a highly placed source.

Once he’s confirmed by the Senate, Wilson will assist Secretary Robert Gates and Deputy Secretary William Lynn with DOD’s public information outreach, internal information distribution, community relations, AV issues, and will be in charge of DOD representation in cross-government communications efforts as well as the Pentagon’s official website.

In addition to his work at the Howard Gilman foundation, Wilson has previously served as President of The Leaders Project, as deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs (1997-1999) and principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs. During his previous Pentagon appearance, Wilson coordinated communications efforts on defense reform, base closures, NATO expansion and military quality of life.

After starting his career as a Foreign Service information officer in a number of overseas assignments, Wilson worked at the U.S. Information Agency, and was a foreign policy advisor to U.S. Senator Gary Hart.

Pary Williamson and Quinn Bradlee 5/4/09

Quinn Bradlee, son of Washington Post legends Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn popped the question (over the phone!) to Pary Williamson and the engagement news was the talk of George Stephanopoulos’ party for Lee Woodruff’s new book.

Sally Quinn tells the WHCInsider that the ring is a Bradlee family heirloom. It belonged to Ben Bradlee’s great-great-grandmother Suzette Crowninshield.  Quinn has been on tour for his new book and web site, Friends of Quinn.  For photos of the book party Barry Diller threw for Quinn go to WHCInsider.com/scrapbook.   Stay tuned for video of the party…

Fox Network Declines to Carry Obama’s Wednesday Presser Live

April 28th, 2009

Fox’s broadcast network has decided not to carry President Obama’s 100th Day news conference live, and will broadcast “Lie to Me” in its regular 8:00 p.m. time slot. This is the third prime-time news conference for Obama, which industry experts estimate will cost the four broadcast networks “$10 million in lost advertising revenue,” according to the AP wire story.

An anonymous source told Associated Press ”that network executives had expressed concern to the White House about the frequency of prime-time news conferences and the financial sacrifice being made to carry the event.” Fox News Channel, Fox’s cable station, will carry the live feed.
