Washington’s Oscar weekend begins May 9 as Hollywood and New York’s biggest celebrities come to town for an evening with the President, Vice President, official Washington and the media.
Wanda Sykes was back in town recently and performed at the Warner Theater.
She joked that she “got into a little trouble” after her WHCA performance in May, but said she was actually “holding back” at the time. “Tonight, I’m not holding back.”
Julia Louis-Dreyfus was estatic for her friend and colleague Wanda Sykes to perform at the WHCD, but was even more excited about her photo op with Michelle Obama.
Its only been 7 days since boldfaced names joined washington’s finest to enjoy a rare weekend together at the WHCD. The President rocked the room and Wanda Sykes rocked Rush Limbaugh and the political world has been debating both. While most WHCInsiders are now focused on the extraordinary war between Speaker Pelosi and the CIA, and the coverage of this war, we thought you would enjoy a digital journey back to what feels like a lifetime ago.
If you weren’t one of the lucky 250 to attend the Bloomberg/Vanity Fair After Party the courteous folks at Bloomberg have brought back their After Party Web site so you see inside the party…. CLICK on http://www.bloomberg.com/afterparty/
Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, told WHCInsider that he thought Obama’s speech was great. Steele said he thought the ribbing was “fine and fair.”
And Wanda’s?
“Wanda is Wanda, she comes real and you got to be prepared. But there will be news made later this week, I guarantee you,” said Steele.
Red carpet pandemonium — packed on both sides of the velvet ropes — photographers and reporters on one side, faced fans and star gazers on the other. Glenn Close,”It’s completely crazy!” Screams and shouts for arriving VIPs: aplusk (Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher), Alicia Keys, Ludacris, Bon Jovi, and Stevie Wonder.
Rapper and actor Ludacris says he’s looking forward to the big correspondents’ dinner tonight, and, noting that he’s been a longtime fan of Wanda Sykes (tonight’s entertainer), adds that she shouldn’t “hold back… there’s too much seriousness in this town.”
Ludarcis attended the 2006 WHCD, when Stephen Colbert was the evening’s entertainment, and said he’s taking his mom tonight,”kind of an early Mother’s Day present.”
Craig Crawford of Congressional Quarterly talks with MSNBC host Keith Olbermann about what kind of speech we might hear from President Obama at tonight’s WHCD, Hollywood’s “return” to the dinner, and suspects “there could be some controversy” about the edgy Wanda Sykes’s performance.
One of the most sought after guests for this year’s WHC Dinner, Captain RichardPhillips and his wife Andrea, made their way to Washington, D.C. on Friday. They received many invitations, but chose to attend with Bloomberg. The Phillips say they are “honored to be Bloomberg’s guests.”
Captain Richard Phillips and his wife Andrea will attend the White House Correspondents Dinner as guests of Bloomberg. Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates along with his crew just weeks ago, will be among the more prominent guests at this year’s correspondents dinner — definitely one of the big “gets” for 2009.
Us magazine reported the former GOP vice presidential nominee will be attending this year’s dinner, but when asked by the Anchorage Daily News to confirm, Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton would only say:
“The governor may be on the East Coast this weekend to attend state events and meetings. If she is there, the governor may accept one of the standing invitations for dinner.”
What do you think? Should she attend? Let us know in a comment.
TomKat and two-time Oscar winner Robert DeNiro will be among the famous faces at the dinner, the Washington Post reports. For more, plus some details on the exclusive Vanity Fair-Bloomberg after-party, click here.
