San Francisco Giants’ Victory Lap in Washington

July 26th, 2011

California’s Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom gathered with friends and supporters after a spectacular day in Washington

The President, in between his Congressional negotiations, met with World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants.  Joining them in the East Room were former San Francisco Mayors Willie Brown and Gavin Newsom, as well as current Mayor Ed Lee, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Baseball legend, Willie Mays, was also in attendance who “was just a 23-year-old out-fielder the last time the Giants won the World Series, back when the team was in New York.”  President Obama said, “even though there have been some great Giant’s teams since them, none of them had brought a championship back to the Bay Area.”  This was a special team indeed, as Obama quoted manager Bruce Bochy, who once called them a bunch of ‘misfits and cast-offs’ and then looks around at the unique team, but then said the “one thing they know, is how to win.”

The President ended his talk with wishing the Giants the best of luck, ”unless the White Sox are in the world series, which right now is not a sure thing” and was then presented with a signed bat, custom glove and jersey #44.

Gavin Newsom, was also in town to discuss his upcoming release of California’s Economic Growth and Competitiveness plan–state’s first plan in a decade–meeting with the Center for American Progress, Brookings Institution, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the State Department, and the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and stopped by 701 Pennsylvania Avenue with friends such as Eve and Peter O’Toole, Marc Adelman, Reta Jo Lewis, Dan Maldonado, Evan Ryan, Francisco Sanchez, Maria Teresa Kumar, Neil Albert, Patricia Daley and Paul Glenchur.

Marc Adelman Named DC Editor for SELF

December 2nd, 2010

Media and political consultant Marc Adelman has a new job title: DC Editor for Condé Nast’s national well-being magazine SELF.

“SELF seamlessly integrates substance and style; empowerment and inspiration in a provocative and influential way, while adding value to millions of lives every day,” says Adelman, who will be working on developing partnerships that represent women’s issues.

The DC metro area appears to be the place to do just that: according to SELF’s 10th annual Healthiest Places for Women survey, last year Bethesda-Gaithersburg-Frederick, MD ranked #2. Washington, DC-Arlington-Alexandria came in at #16 out of 100.

Chef Geoff Conquers Tysons

Chef Geoff and Norah O'Donnell

Party-goers raised thousands of dollars for charity at the pening of the new Chef Geoff’s Tysons Corner restaurant. More than 300 tickets were sold, benefiting Children’s National Medical Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Geoff Tracy (MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell) were there to welcome guests with signature cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. Party veterans stood near the kitchen to get first pick of the tasty appetizers: mini burgers, tuna on a crispy triangle, and other delectables.

The bar was equally impressive, serving three types of cocktails: a Strawberry Mojito, Norah’s French Kiss (!), and Subconscious Desire.

NBC White House Correspondent Savannah Guthrie and Democratic Consultant Marc Adelman were on hand, mingling with other guests in the packed restaurant’s bar, its large dining room, and cozy smaller space fit for a private gathering.

Nestled between Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co., the new restaurant, adorned with red awnings, is upscale, yet warm, with a large bar and windows. I’m sure it’s the next Happy Hour hot spot. Chef Geoff himself glowed with the anticipation of success; his new venture joins his other local establishments in downtown Washington, D.C., and Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Neighboring businesses joined in the benefit, donating luxury items such as a Tiffany’s necklace and Gucci handbag, for a silent auction.  As a parting gift, nothing could be better than Chef’s Geoff’s chocolate chip cookies — the best I’ve ever had: not too sweet, not too hard … just right.

Chef Geoff Tysons is now open for lunch and dinner, and is located across from Tysons Corner Mall on Leesburg Pike.

Will Mike Allen Tip Hat to Self?

Birthday Cake

Mike Allen's Birthday Cake

Politico Playbook Editor Turns 45

Politico’s Mike Allen celebrated his birthday on Wednesday. The h/t goes to the 150+ people who turned out on a cold and damp evening for a man who is what Harry Truman called a rare Washington commodity: a friend.

The cake (candles lit by Austan Goolsbee) — and lapel pins — carried an image knocked off from another president, fitting for the editor of Politico’s Playbook.

Did too much birthday celebration interfere with Allen’s “Morning Joe” appearance the next day? No one’s telling.
