August 24th, 2009

Kate Walsh and Sean Smith relax at the Bloomberg Vanity Fair After Party

Private Practice star Kate Walsh told Capitol File she loved President Obama’s comedic shtick at the White House Correspondents Dinner:

“I thought the president’s speech was fantastic. I appreciated his self-deprecating humor. And Wanda Sykes was hilarious. It was great to get to meet (and geek out over) so many of the Washington press and politicians, too.”

And, possibly for the first time, Washington was called a “very exciting, sexy place.”

The Daily Show With Jon Stewart Celebrates 10 Years

John Hodgman

Netizens are viewing John Hodgman’s RTCA dinner routine in greater numbers than Wanda Sykes’ WHCD routine — that’s not a surprise. But Mediabistro points out Hodgman’s numbers top President Obama’s RTCA remarks, proving “don’t understimate a nerd.”

WHCD Now A “Hollywood Night”

June 3rd, 2009
U.S. President Barack Obama attends the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington

The White House Correspondents Dinner is now “a Hollywood night,” so says David Letterman friend and comedian Jim Gaffigan.  “Having known Wanda for 15 years, it was like, ‘She’s holding back a little bit.’ It’s really interesting to see how that Correspondents’ Dinner has changed since the Colbert thing.”

Fall Out From Sykes’ Jokes About Rush Limbaugh

May 12th, 2009

Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington

Did Wanda Sykes go too far at the WHCD when she hoped Rush Limbaugh’s kidneys would fail, or with her joke that Limbaugh might have been the final 9-11 terrorist, but he overslept due to OxyContin?

From Fox News: “Did Wanda Sykes Go Too Far at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner?”

From The Los Angeles Times blog: “Does Sykes comedy routine deserve laughter or loathing?”

From The NY Daily News: “Obama Administration Distances Itself from Wanda Sykes’ 9/11-Rush Limbaugh Joke”

What do you think: Did Wanda go too far?

Sykes Had Tough Act to Follow, Says Comedy Pro

2009 White House Correspondents Association Dinner

D.C. Comedy Pro Richard Siegel Reviewed Sykes Performance for WHCInsider

What is the hardest job in the country? It’s to follow President ObamaWanda Sykes, grabbed the microphone, commanded the stage; she was bold, not over the top, brash  not X-rated, cool, calm, collected and yes, very funny. She stunned the audience numerous times, as people would look around, dressed in their black tie attire, wondering if it was okay to laugh.  No subject was out of bounds.  Wanda knew how far to go, knew her boundaries, attacked every target, but did not get too racy nor leave any subject alone.   Sykes talked about Obama’s nipples when he appears without a shirt, and of course, discussed the “legacy” of Bush, the guest who stayed in your house and got out of town before you noticed that he broke everything.

As I watched Wanda confidently address the country and the journalists, I felt like a proud parent. I have watched Wanda grow from an open mike comedienne and comedy contestant in the 80s to what she is today, a major force in comedy.  Her style has changed, as in the early days her sarcasm was one of her most powerful weapons. Tonight, it was her charm, confidence and charisma that stood out.

Doesn’t Seem Wanda Sykes Will Tone Down Her WHCD Routine Tonight

May 9th, 2009

Asked by WHCInside whether she would hold back anything for her monologue tonight, comedian Wanda Sykes said, “I don’t think so.”

During the steady stream of red carpet arrivals at the Washington Hilton, screams and yells from star-gazers behind the velvet ropes often bewildered some of the guests. Sykes even looked taken aback at times, but made her way on into the ballroom.

How Local Girl Wanda Sykes Made Good Using Bad Words

D.C. Comedy Impresario Richard Siegel Hosted First Contest Sykes Entered

Wanda Sykes — the emcee of this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, who is known for her often raw, blush-inducing commentary — has a lot of inquiring minds wondering just how raw her routine might be this Saturday night.

Richard Siegel, veteran producer on the D.C. comedy scene.

Richard Siegel, veteran producer on the D.C. comedy scene.

One of her biggest fans thinks that, when time comes for her to address her high-powered audience, “she really should tone it down. Audiences here are a lot more conservative generally,” Richard Siegel tells WHCInsider.com. “They don’t like things getting too edgy.”

The longtime producer of the annual “D.C.’s Funniest Celebrity” contest, Siegel knows a little about what kind of comedy works in this town. He’s also known Sykes since the late 1980s, when he was managing a local stand-up comedy contest at the Comedy Cafe, located above a strip club that enforced a dress code. Read more…

Ali Wentworth Tells WHCInsider Her Twitter e-Rules

May 5th, 2009

Ali Wentworth from whcinsider on Vimeo.

Ali Wentworth, actress, comedienne, Oprah regular, and wife of George Stephanopoulos gave WHCInsider the exclusive insight on her e-rules for the Information Super Highway. WHCInsider has learned that George Stephanopoulos is not permitted to tweet when Ali Wentworth is talking. Ali also doesn’t permit BlackBerrys in the bedroom and says tweeting should be something you do when you’re alone.

And she predicts her former boss, Jay Leno, will be a hit in his new 10:00 p.m. time slot, and thinks Wanda Sykes was told to tone down her blue humor for the WHCD. We picked up these scoops at the raucous party Ali and George hosted Monday night for the fun and fabulous Lee Woodruff’s second book: Perfectly Imperfect.

Check out our interview with Ali and you’ll know why she’s got her own show, “Head Case,” why she has a regular seat on Oprah, and why George is always smiling!

White House Press Corps Needs “Somebody to Yell at ‘Em,” Letterman Writer Says

Bill Scheft Hails Wanda Sykes as Great Choice for WHCD Entertainment

can’t loosen up when Sykes starts her monologue, it’s likely to get what it deserves, says Scheft, a veteran scribe for “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

“If they take Wanda too seriously, she’s going to let ‘em have it,” Scheft tells WHCInsider. “I’ve know Wanda a long time. She’ll really give it to ‘em, and I think that’s what they need — somebody to yell at ‘em.”

Scheft says that Sykes was a great choice to book for the entertainment, noting that Stephen Colbert — who raised as many hackles as he did laughs with his controversial routine at the 2006 dinner — is altogether different. “Colbert was a character playing a character playing a character at that dinner. He’s very character-oriented. Wanda is much more joke-oriented.” Read more…

Wanda-isms: Which is Your Favorite?

May 2nd, 2009
Apollo Theater Fourth Annual Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Inside

Barack Obama is known to prepare his speeches skillfully and, when appropriate, with an occasional shot of humor. Doubtlessly he’ll be working up some good lines for his address to the 2009 WHCD — cracking jokes is part of the tradition. But for Wanda Sykes, the dinner’s entertainment this year, cracking on something — or somebody — just seems to come naturally.

Below are results from a quick Web search for some of her recent one-liners.

To a Los Angeles audience welcoming her with a standing ovation: “Oh, come on, it ain’t like you never seen a black lesbian before.” -The Advocate

On people opposed to gay marriage: “Why do you care that Bob and Jim are getting married, unless you were planning on [having sex with] Bob or Jim?” -The Advocate

On fame: “I guess because of my act, people think that I say things they want to say, and that they can just come up and say anything to me. That bugs me. But I’d rather have people come up and want to meet me than have them ignore me. It’s just timing. Don’t bother me while I’m eating, or when I’m coming out of the crackhouse or something. Just let me get going.” – The Onion

On random searches at airport security: “There’s nothing random about it. You get to the gate and they’re standing there with their Sherwin-Williams paint chart. If your ass is darker than khaki, you’re getting searched.” -Entertainment Weekly

On President George W. Bush: “Either he’s retarded or he thinks we’re retarded” – The Advocate

Got a favorite Wanda-ism? Maybe from a movie or TV show she’s been in, or maybe you caught her stand-up act and remember one or two that made you really laugh?

Let us know in a comment.

It’s “Celebrity” at CBS Tables for WHCD

May 1st, 2009

2009 Stagecoach Country Music Festival

Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer, who moonlights as a musician, is bringing country music recording artist Brad Paisley. TV Newser reports Schieffer and Paisley met each other “at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where they both performed.” If the conversation’s dull, maybe Schieffer and Paisley could perform his hit “Celebrity.”

‘Cause when you’re a celebrity, it’s adios reality.
You can act just like a fool;
People think you’re cool just ’cause you’re on TV.

Other celebrities at CBS tables: Hollywood spouses Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus — who plays Wanda Sykes’ “wife” on TV — and Julia’s husband, director Brad Hall. The list is full of political heavy weights too: Mayor Adrian Fenty, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Gov. Jon Corzine, Amb. Hector Timerman, and Colin Powell. White House names at the CBS tables include Stephanie Cutter, Tom Donilon, Arne Duncan, Michele Flournoy, Lisa Jackson, David Jacobson, and Katie Johnson.
